Confirmed Opt-In (Or Not) article
I just spent several hours last week researching the options with confirmed Opt-in (also known as verified opt-in, double opt-in and possibly more depending on the vendor). The reason that I was looking into the confirmed opt-in option was we are running a campaign currently and we had a few people leave their sign up but never complete the confirmation. So, I went on the hunt to find out if we could capture the names without forcing the confirmation opt-in process. The 3 systems that I was looking at were Aweber , IContact and 1ShoppingCart .
Well, the short answer is yes. With all three of the systems that we were looking at we could do this. Yes, Aweber does allow you to turn off the Confirmed Opt-in. They allow this at a list level (you can turn it off for one list but leave it on for the rest). 1ShoppingCart does it for the entire account (group of lists that you have). IContact also allows for single opt-in as well but I'm not sure if it is at a list level or account level, as we don't currently use IContact. It was pretty tempting to go in to the list on our Aweber account and turn off the Confirmed Opt-in on the list for the campaign but I hesitated. Why? Well, in my research to find out how to turn it off (it actually very easy, I'll put the instructions at the bottom of the blog for you), I kept hitting the documentation, blogs and forums on why you would want Confirmed Opt-in.
1ShoppingCart (they call theirs Verified Opt-in) goes so far to have a 2 tier system. Tier one is for accounts that use Verified Opt-in and they state the deliverability is higher. Tier two is for accounts that don't have Verified Opt-in. It appears that they have created two different systems and if you use Verified Opt-in, you get in the system that has better deliverability.
Aweber talks about higher deliverability with Confirmed Opt-in but doesn't describe how. Although it is mentioned that ISPs track the bounce backs and will penalize (not deliver) messages if the bounce back gets too high. We have also heard (read) of instances of long delays in the messages being delivered from systems that only have single opt-in. We have no experience with this so we don't know first hand but I'm on a couple of lists that didn't use the confirmed opt-in and some of their messages are arriving in my inbox well after they have sent them. Sometimes it is time sensitive information and we missed out on the opportunity. So what did we decide to do. Well we decided to continue with our Aweber list that we have started. We are using the "Confirmation Success Page" option to drive people to the free content after they signed up. Turning off the Confirmed Opt-in would have caused us to rework this (it could have been done but this is a nice feature). We also decided to work on a few things to increase our confirmation rate. Aweber has some good tips on how to do this but our first task is to improve our thank you page that they are sent to after leaving their information.
Instructions for turning off Confirmed Opt-in on Aweber (I recommend doing your own research first though)
1. Select the List in the List selection drop down.
2. Go to "My Lists" in the menu and then "Confirmed Opt-in" in the sub-menu.
3. You will be taken to your pages that has the Confirmed Opt-in information. You will see a status that is displayed in Green and says "ON". Click on the Green box and it will toggle to "OFF"
4. Your done.
